Potatoes have come a long way from their origins in the small fields of South America. Today they are grown in over 180 countries. Russia is the world leader in production - growing about 33% of the world crop.
Chitting - Seed tubers are encouraged to grow shoots before they are planted, as this helps early growth and development of the potato plant. Early potatoes are planted in February / March and main crop from March onwards. Visit our varieties page to find out which varieties are early and late. During the potato growing season they are sprayed for diseases, also irrigated to increase yield and potentially stop scab - a tuber skin blemishing disease.
