Disease - Silver Scurf

Silver Scurf (Helminthosporium solani ) is one of the most common potato skin blemishes which spreads rapidly during storage. Silver Scurf is a purely cosmetic defect, caused by the fungus causing silvery grey lesions on the surface of the potato. These lesions are often roughly circular, but can cover most of the potato skin surface. Severely affected tubers can loose moisture causing the tuber to shrivel and loose its 'bloom'.

Silver Scurf symptoms can sometimes be seen in the field before harvest, but it is under moist, warm conditions during the storage season that the fungus infection can spread extensively. Therefore one of the methods of preventing or limiting the spread of Silver Scurf is to ensure that during the storage period the stores are cool, 3°C, and dry.
