Common Slug

Slugs are the most widely known of pests that can attack a crop of potatoes. Slugs will spoil potatoes by making cavities into the tubers.

Slugs are rarely seen above ground, and their activity greatly depends on the temperature and moisture content of the soil. The slugs optimum temperature is 18°C, and favouring medium to heavy soils and with these correct conditions they are at their most active. Dry conditions being their main hazard.

Varieties that are most favoured by slugs are Cara and Maris Piper.
