Potato History
Potatoes During The Wars

Britain declared war on Germany on the 3rd September 1939. This had a great effect on people of Britain, they had to make large changes in their lifestyles, from gas masks, air raid shelters and blackouts to rationing.

Part of the rationing was the governments' campaign to 'Dig for Victory' encouraging the public to convert extra land into potato production and even grow potatoes on their own in the allotments.

The area in production increased from 285,000ha in 1938 to 569,000 in 1946.

Potatoes were grown everywhere, in the country's back gardens in bins and tyres, a good way of utilizing a little space for maximum use for your county.
